Kelly Christensen

Kelly Christensen is a self-taught painter based in Red Deer, Alberta. He came to painting in his 30s — later than most, but with a lifetime of looking behind him. What began as curiosity quickly became a practice, and the practice became something he couldn't stop.
Working primarily in acrylic, watercolour, and mixed media, Kelly moves between the representational and the abstract — landscapes that dissolve into colour fields, figures that blur into their surroundings, and compositions that hum with an almost electric energy. His work is built on layering, texture, and an intuitive sense of colour that he has developed entirely through doing.
His paintings are held in private collections across Canada and are available as originals, limited edition prints, and commissions. He sells prints through ArtPal and exhibits in Alberta.

I started painting in my 30s and I wish I had started sooner — but maybe I needed all those years first. I paint because I have to. The process is slow, physical, and often surprising. I follow the paint as much as I lead it, and what interests me most is the moment a painting stops being a description of something and starts being a thing in itself. I am largely self-taught, which means I have no rules to break — only ones I make up and then ignore.
